Wed, 05 Oct 2011 11:05:33 GMT http://www.nvfdco4.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=14 Water Rescue on Potomac River despite weather related delays! http://www.nvfdco4.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=13 On the evening of July 3 at approx. 2026 hrs as a severe thunderstorm passed thru the area with strong gusty winds and severe lightning Boat 4 was alerted in Company 8's first due on the Potomac River near Leesylvania State Park for a boat in distress taking on water. Boat 4 responded with a crew of three. Several water resources were alerted to the call as Charles County Chief 8 had the command and coordinated thru a Prince William County Battalion Chief from the Virginia side at Leesylvania Park. As an intensive search was underway and contact lost with the vessel, a flare sighting was observed by several units who responded to the area. Upon arrival of Quantico Fire / Rescue Boat 531 and Charles County Fire Boat 4, a capsized vessel was located with four subjects in the water using the capsized vessel as flotation. Boat 4 was able to manuever into position utilizing the "water level" access door with ladder subsequently rescuing all four subjects unharmed. This was a combined rescue effort and could not have been possible without the assistance of all responding units, the Charles County 911 Communications Center and the determination of the vessel occupants to locate and utilize a Flare Gun found floating among other debris of their capsized boat. Maryland DNR Police took possession of the capsized vessel and Boat 4 transported the subjects back to Leesylvania Park in Virginia, where they had originally launched. Many thanks to the Virginia authorities on shore who facilitated transportaion for the subjects who lost everything on the vessel including vehicle keys and cell phones. Once complete, the unit will be delieverd to Nanjemoy where tool placement and lettering / striping will be decided upon. On June 9, 2011 the Apparatus committee traveled to the Rosenbauer plant in Wyoming Minnesota for the "final inspection" of Engine 42. The pumper is very impressive. Some of the features include; 1500 gal. booster tank (poly), 1500 gpm pump, 30 gal foam tank, several pre-connected lines at the front middle and rear of the unit, a booster line, a Wilburt light tower, 20kw Harrison generator, dual command / information center for both D/O and OIC, rear intake, a 525 hp twin turbo charged Caterpillar Engine with a Jacobs Engine Brake. The unit features electric windows and an intercom system. The unit is slated to be delivered in mid June. The members of NVFD look forward to taking delivery of this unit in the very near future! We would like to thank DPC Emergency and Rosenbauer for their continued support, assistance and expertise in the buidling of our last two pieces of apparatus. It has served the community & county well! http://www.nvfdco4.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=11 "Old" Brush Engine 44 is now officially retired! The unit was sold and delivered on Sunday May 22 to a collector from the Eastern Shore. "Old" E-44 performed over the last 24 years extremely well and remains mechanically sound. We wish the new owner our very best with the unit and hope to see it again...The replacement, which is almost identical to the "old" E-44 does have several new upgrades, which includes a larger booster tank, additional booster and attack lines and a larger capacity water pump and WEPS system or CAFS. The "New" E-44 will be placed in service within the month, after required training is conducted and county standards have been met. Because of the economy, the members voted to "scaledown" this years event to a "go as you are" style event. In fact , it appears this years recognition event was more enjoyable than years past. The food was outstanding and a good time was had by all. Despite the cutbacks, we were still able to recognize those members who went above and beyond the expectations of the company and those who have served in the highest tradition of the company, community and the county. A big thanks to our member, resident caterer and chef Mike Kisamore for preparing and catering the food for the event, thanks Mike and family!
